Oasis Academy Bank Leaze are part of a Tesco initiative to get more fruit and vegetables in the hands of children.
This is a new £4 million programme to fund free fruit and vegetables for schools – and children – across the country. Working with the British Nutrition Foundation, Tesco invited 400 schools to join the programme and Oasis Academy Bank Leaze have been lucky enough to be part of this.
With this extra funding, the academy aims to make sure every pupil at the academy can have an extra piece of fruit or vegetable every day.
Each week, the Operations Manager, Ms N Sutherland, does a large fruit and veg shop at Tesco using a prepaid card (funded by Tesco). With the help of the academy's Year 4 ‘Fruit Monitors,’ they set up a small fruit and veg stall in the playground to distribute fruit to the whole academy.
“This initiative has made a real difference in our school. It's been amazing to see the children excited about getting their daily fruit, and the Year 4 pupils are doing a fantastic job in helping distribute it.”
This has been a huge success, and the pupils are loving this initiative. The Fruit Monitors have also really enjoyed their additional responsibility around the academy.
"We’re really proud to be part of such a wonderful programme," says Ms A Nelson, Principal of Oasis Academy Bank Leaze. "Our pupils are enjoying eating healthier, and the 'Fruit Monitors' have really embraced their added responsibility. It’s a win-win for everyone!"
